INTENTIONS

Previously we talked about overcoming our fears, working towards who we want to be, and finding motivation to stay consistent. But now I want to talk about our intentions and working towards being more intentional.

Be intentional about how you present yourself and the way you want to be seen.

Have you ever been in a situation where you may have sought out to do something but instead had the opposite result? Was it is your intention for it to end up that way? Maybe this doesn't apply to you but this is actually more common than we would think. Recently, I came across an individual, working in a school, who had horrible people skills. This person literally seemed like a miserable and overall rude individual who had no business working in a school environment. (Or any environment where they would have to interact with children or their parents.) I'm sure it wasn't their intent to come across that way but OMG it was obvious that they were not a good fit for that role. This person clearly needs to work on their intentions. Sometimes I feel that we all need to put our intentions in check. If you still have no idea what I'm talking about here are some examples of situations where we may want to work on our intentions:

  • Eating healthy

  • Self improvement

  • Acts of kindness

These are all relatable and common things people struggle with. Let's break these down and really explore. So you want to make healthier choices with the food you eat. The intention here would be that you want to eat healthier. As a result, you buy healthy options but you might never put them to use. Or, you work on eating healthier but you also utilize every opportunity to eat bad things and call it a "healthy balance." In order to get the results you seek, you'd have to intentionally eat healthier so that you can support your decision to make healthier choices.

Now you want to be a better human being. The intention here is that you want to be better than you were before. Instead, you have opportunities for improvement but settle for where you are currently because it seems safe. You might even know someone who can benefit from this opportunity but you keep it to yourself because you are "low-key" competing to be better than someone else. Being better than someone else doesn't necessarily mean you are a better human being. In fact, you can be considered a horrible human being because of how you came about to be "better" than someone else. In order to intentionally be a better person you'd have to work towards self improvement and not limiting yourself or anyone else along the way.

So now you want to associate yourself as a kind person. The intention is simply to be kind. In order to be a kind person, you must be able to do kind things. These are called acts of kindness where kind people do kind things. Instead, you may unintentionally hurt someone along the way. But did that happen accidentally or did you intentionally set out to do something that wouldn't be considered kind? You might be able to call bullshit on someone else but it's even more important to call it on yourself.

This is a perfect opportunity to put your intentions in check because clearly it was mixed up somewhere along the way. And we have to keep in mind that it's okay if that happens as long as we stay true to our intentions and redirect ourselves to get back on track. In today's society there's a new trend to follow almost daily. But this doesn't mean that you must follow each one. You will need to be intentional about what you choose to believe in and associate yourself with. Otherwise, you can get caught up in something even though the intent wasn't there.

I hope you understand the impact our intentions have on our everyday lives. I hope you truly see how our intentions can be different from what we intended to do and why it is important to be more intentional moving forward. Leave a comment below on your thoughts on this! I can't wait to hear what you think.
